Ode to the Seekh Kabab

A man minces his words and you call him reticent and uncommunicative. But when a man minces meat and grills it to perfection on open charcoal, he needs no more words- his creation says it all.. and with what loquacity! Flaky grilled minced meat wrapped around skewers, overwhelming fulfilling and satiating to the point of insatiability, much like making love with unquenchable lust and indefatigable flesh..this is what the seekh kabab does to me at Haji Tikka, neatly ensconced at a tiny crossroad inside Bohri mohalla, south mumbai.
One cannot have enough of this quintessential meat from the street, this being an apt metaphor of the eating delight, almost carnal in nature, like satisfying a primal craving. The prices are good and the portions unpretentious served in well worn steel plates and served with dollops of mint and onion slices..this time around I got mint chutney but i personally prefer the mint leaves. As I wolf down plate after plate, i am more and more in peace with myself; like having met my maker and having nothing to say to him; just the desire to feed well, eat to my hearts content and then lie down till the next morning or the next birth. The kabab morsels literally melt in the mouth and leave a lingering taste or aftertaste, if you like, of aromatic grilled meat and a juicy nurturing feeling inside the whole mouth, something that I cant write more about but which can perhaps only be experientially valued.
The bread is optional; at worst a jarring interlude between these morsels of delight- a grim reminder of the ordinariness that is so all pervasive except when in communion with the kabab morsel; at best, it is a devise to break the intensity of the taste, sort of to cleanse the palate and start afresh with another culinary invasion in the mouth.

Despite the divisible and undifferentiated nature of minced meat, every small flake, particle of the seekh kabab so redolently aromatically and satisfyingly titillates the senses, much like the diversity seen in the Indian subcontinent, don’t you think?
